                                                                                                                     The Nature Table

In the Waldorf-inspired classroom is often a nature table where the children may observe and handle real objects from the natural world.  The wise teacher keeps the table alive with “finds” from weekend walks or , sometimes, a child might bring in an item from home for a day to go on the table.
There are usually examples from the mineral world, the plant world, the animal world, and the human world.  An inquiry-based attitude is established about the items.  Where could this come from?  How did it get to look like this?  Do you ever find things like this in your own yard or at the park?
Because the nature table is special and often embellished  with beautiful fabric, it encourages the child to develop a wonder and awe of the world around us, its moods and seasons.  This wonder and awe leads to reverence and respect for all living things, and, especially, each other.
