Knitting

Mona has been teaching knitting to her third Graders since 1994.
Here is the process she uses and some verses to go along.

Step 1: Rolling a ball of wool
Verse:
 I can roll a ball of wool, a ball of wool, a ball of wool,
 I can roll a ball of wool and that's the way I do it.

Step 2:Finger Knitting
Make a loop and pull string through the loop. Repeat making a chain. These two first steps get students' fingers ready for knitting.

Step 3: Sanding knitting needles
Use dowel rods cut about 8 inches in length and less than 1/4 inch in diameter.
Let students use sandpaper and sand one end of the dowel. Use sculpy and make a round top for the needle. Each student needs two needles.

Step 4: Casting on stitches
Verse:
 Splash in the water;
Swim to right;
Go over the wave;
Go under the wave;
Now aren't you brave.

Use one dowel rod to put loops on a needle. I usually start with 10-20 stiches.

Step 5: Knitting
Verse:
 In through the front door;
Run around the back;
Looking through the window
And off pops Jack.

Use the other needle to knit all the stitches off of one needle then reverse and knit all the stitches off the other needle.

Step 6: Casting off stitches. If you knit 20 stitches, you can make a square. I have used many different color squares put together to make an afghan.
